殷墟亚长墓即殷墟花园庄M54号墓，是一座商代晚期中型墓葬，出土玉石器多达228件。本书共十三章，内容涵盖亚长墓玉石器的称名，玉石器的材质、型式、分组与归属、组合与功用、等列、年代，墓主人的族属与职业、职官，周边墓葬与亚长墓的关系等方面，亦涉及遗玉、改玉、假玉、铜器玉器随葬双轨制等玉文化的传承与交流等内容，可以说对亚长墓出土玉石器进行了全面细致的分析与研究。亚长墓玉石器研究在出土玉器研究及商代历史文化研究中，具有特殊和重要的地位与价值。

本书所收文章，是我在1977年至1992年间完成的，是我的早期著作。时间虽过去十三年，但书中的不少基本观点，已经受住时间的检验，是可以立足的。例如，关于“妇好”姓氏问题，文章指出，“妇好”非“子”姓，“妇好”乃“子方”之女；关于殷人姓氏问题，文章指出，殷人非“子”姓，而是“妃”姓。殷人姓氏问题，在1991年出土的殷墟花园庄东地甲骨卜辞中，再次得到了证实，已成定案。”关于殷代金文中的“亚”形问题，文章指出“亚”是一种武职官名，担任这一职官的通常是诸侯。尽管目前学界对“亚”字仍有不同的看法，但对铭文族徽中的“亚”形，认为是代表武职官名，渐成共识。再如铭文族徽中的“戈”字，文章指出是代表夏部遣民后裔氏族，这也得到愈来愈多学者的认可。所有这些，都使笔者感到欣慰。
